Development and evaluation of animated concept cartoons for middle school astronomy teaching: A case of the Moon misconceptions

Abstract

Misconceptions are one of the common problems of learning science. Detecting and eliminating them requires some specialized teaching/learning strategies in addition to traditional teaching/learning activities in schools. One of the learning aids used to detect and to eliminate misconceptions is concept cartoons. The aim of this study is to develop a series of animated concept cartoons about the Moon and to examine students’ opinions about whether they are usable to detect and correct students’ misconceptions about the Moon. In this study, five animated concept cartoons for five misconceptions about the Moon were developed and implemented to 197 students from three urban public middle schools in Turkiye. Participants were asked to respond to a three-tier test and a concept cartoon opinion form. Data obtained from these instruments were analyzed via quantitative/descriptive statistical analyses. It was found that many participants have misconceptions, probable misconceptions and lack of knowledge about the Moon. It was also found that most of the participants thought that the animated concept cartoons are useful, enjoyable and intriguing learning aids.
