Development and evaluation of animated concept cartoons for middle school astronomy teaching: A case of the Moon misconceptions

Öz

Misconceptions are one of the common problems of learning science. Detecting and eliminating them requires some specialized teaching/learning strategies in addition to traditional teaching/learning activities in schools. One of the learning aids used to detect and to eliminate misconceptions is concept cartoons. The aim of this study is to develop a series of animated concept cartoons about the Moon and to examine students’ opinions about whether they are usable to detect and correct students’ misconceptions about the Moon. In this study, five animated concept cartoons for five misconceptions about the Moon were developed and implemented to 197 students from three urban public middle schools in Turkiye. Participants were asked to respond to a three-tier test and a concept cartoon opinion form. Data obtained from these instruments were analyzed via quantitative/descriptive statistical analyses. It was found that many participants have misconceptions, probable misconceptions and lack of knowledge about the Moon. It was also found that most of the participants thought that the animated concept cartoons are useful, enjoyable and intriguing learning aids.

Kavram yanılgıları, fen bilimleri öğreniminde karşılaşılan yaygın öğrenme sorunlarından biridir. Bunları tespit etmek ve ortadan kaldırmak, okuldaki geleneksel ölçme ve öğrenme etkinliklerini destekleyen bazı özel öğretme/öğrenme stratejileri gerektirir. Kavram yanılgılarını tespit etmek ve düzeltmek için kullanılan öğrenme araçlarından biri kavram karikatürleridir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Ay hakkında bir dizi animasyonlu kavram karikatürü geliştirmek ve öğrencilerin bu karikatürlerin Ay hakkındaki kavram yanılgılarını tespit etmek ve düzeltmek için kullanılabilir olup olmadığı hakkındaki görüşlerini incelemektir. Bu çalışmada, Ay hakkındaki beş kavram yanılgısı için beş animasyonlu kavram karikatürü geliştirilmiş ve üç devlet ortaokulunda öğrenim gören 197 öğrenciye uygulanmıştır. Uygulama sürecinde katılımcılardan kavram karikatürleri ile ilgili üç aşamalı bir teste ve bir kavram karikatürü görüş formuna yanıt vermeleri istenmiştir. Bu veri toplama araçlarından elde edilen veriler, nicel/betimleyici yöntemlerle analiz edilmiştir. Birçok katılımcının Ay hakkında kavram yanılgılarına, muhtemel kavram yanılgılarına ve bilgi eksikliğine sahip olduğu görülmüştür. Ayrıca, katılımcıların çoğunun animasyonlu kavram karikatürlerini faydalı, eğlenceli ve merak uyandırıcı öğrenme araçları olduğunu düşündüğü de tespit edilmiştir.
